Colin M. Thomas,
Chief Minerals Geologist Colin Thomas graduated from
the University of St. Andrews in Scotland with a BSc (Hons) in Geology in
1960. After a year as a a research student at St. Andrews University, Colin
spent the next six as a geologist with the Minerals Resources Division of
the Tanzania Government where he was responsible for regional mapping of
kimberlitic terrane with inspection of and plotting kimberlitic intrusions
discovered by DeBeers. In 1967, he moved to the Geological Survey of
Botswana, as the senior regional geologist, where he was concerned primarily
with major copper-nickel, copper and diamondiferous kimberlite deposits.
He joined RobSearch Australia (then named Robertson Research (Australia))
in 1970 as a senior geologist, and was responsible for establishing and
managing the company's operations in Western Australia. Over the following
six years, he was supervised a large number of regional and detailed
exploration programmes in WA. Queensland, Indonesia and the Pacific Islands.
In 1976-79, he was seconded to the Robertson Group for assignment to:
 | the Government of Sudan, to plan and implement exploration programs
for gold, asbestos, chromite and uranium, |
 | the Asian Development Bank, Manila, to participate in a review of
South
Korea's geoscience institutions, and |
 | the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, to lead a large,
multi-discipline
group of geotechnical specialists operating a uranium exploration
program. |
At the end of 1979, Colin returned to Sydney as a senior and, later, the
Chief Minerals Geologist of Robertson Research (Australia).
Since then, he has been responsible for a wide variety of home office and
field assignments, including:
 | supervision of field exploration programs in Australia, Papua New
Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Fiji, |
 | planning, management and interpretation of regional exploration,
based
on remote sensing techniques, for metallic and non-metallic minerals,
coal and petroleum in Australia, Papua New Guinea and the Pacific
Islands, |
 | property assessments and valuations for gold and platinum group
metals, base metals, uranium and diamonds in Australia, |
 | supervision of the major exploration geology segment of a consulting
contract for Hindustan Copper, in India, and |
 | other major exploration, evaluation and valuation assignments in
North
Africa, Indonesia and New Zealand. |
In summary, the major part of Colin's career has been spent on consulting
assignments in various countries of Asia and the South Pacific, and earlier
in sub-Sahara Africa. He is a specialist in the interpretation of remote
sensing and field exploration data for precious and base metals exploration
programs, and in geological resource audits, assessment and valuation of
precious metals, base metals and uranium properties. |
